Aww… isn’t she cute

UPDATED: FEB 09 – I thought I would share this great experience we had with a skunk last summer for the Outdoor Hour Challenge. Isn’t she adorable. She was released back to the wild once she could hunt on her own.

Baby Skunk Bottle Feeding

Remember that baby skunk I mentioned last week? We got an up close introduction to her today. I never in a millon years would have thought we would happily hold a SKUNK… but isn’t she cute?! Bella is actually quite sweet, similar to a kitten and the kids enjoyed getting a chance to hold her. We also got to see her bottle feed.

Fairy really enjoyed petting Bella.

She was even willing to hold her until Bella tried to climb on her shoulder.

Pixie wanted to hold her and was mad when we wouldn’t let her.

Bug was a bit more cautious but did finally decide to pet her.

Hmmm…just can’t feel the skunk-love. Might have something to do with my dog who is still vaguely stinky after his first run-in with a skunk almost 2 months ago. Aside from the extremely unfortunate task of bathing said stinky dog, which of course fell to me, I’m not looking forward to the fact that the vet said that he will probably smell when wet for up to a year. (!!) She does look quite a bit like Flower from Bambi though.

Well, I was sceptical about the whole petting the skunk thing but the owner assured us that she has never sprayed yet. He found her on the side of the road. Her mother had been hit and he has been feeding her dog formula and trying to teach her to hunt for worms, grubs, etc. She is very much like a kitten. She even uses a litter box. He has been trying to find a rehabilitation center but no one seems concerned about a skunk. They tend to take in the endangered species. The kids enjoyed meeting her. Not many people can say they’ve held a skunk (of course I’m sure not many would want to).

As a new member of The Skunk Holders Club of America I can say that she was sweet as can be. She tried to suckle on my fingers and nestled into my neck to nap! Stink or no stink she won my heart! I did read that when people keep them as pets they can be deglanded at between 2 – 4 weeks. She is older than that and is very capable of spraying…which I did not know at the time. She did have a slight “skunky” smell but she was soooo adorable…what’s a little stink, right? The owner tried do get our border collie to say hi. She had been sprayed several years ago. She did wonder over to check her out but I pointed out that I didn’t think it was a very good idea for our dog to think skunks were their friend! This skunk is pretty layed back because she thinks a human is her mama, but the sooner he get reintroducer to nature, the better it will be. I wish her a long and happy life!
