This week’s Unplugged Challenge theme was fruit. We have been doing so many things with apples over the past few weeks (you can scroll through my past blog postings to see more of our apple activities) it was hard to choose the one thing I wanted to label as our Unplugged activity. I decided to share photos from our trip to the cider mill to watch the cider press in action. It was very noisy but the kids thought it was really cool.
I would also encourage you to check out our Apple Print Project. The apple prints turned out great… although I think the kids had more fun playing with the huge box of stamps Gammy unearthed when she went in search of stamp pads for us.

Looks like a fun trip. What cute pictures of the kids covering their ears 😉
What a great field trip.
Mmmmm. I can taste the donuts…we have a great cider mill about a half hour away, but holy cow is it crowded this time of year!
Great photos! That is one huge press 🙂 The only cider press I’ve ever seen in real life are the smaller barrel type ones that your screw down to press the apples 🙂
How fun!! It looks like ya’ll have had a lot of fruit activities going on.
Looks like you and your family have been having LOTS of apple fun! We “studied” apples when my daughter was younger, and one of her favorite things (and something she still asks for) was the “Apple Star Story.” Here’s a version I found online – http://www.mrsmcgowan.com/1stgrade/applestory.htm (Of course, you have to cut an apple the “wrong way” while telling this story!) Oh, and I just remembered my uncle used to cut an apple and make it into a swan! You might Google “apple swan garnish”. Have fun!!!
Wonder what they do with all the left over mushed apples? Sell for livestock, use for mulch??? Definetly looks cleaner than most cider mills I’ve seen!
Dana thanks for the link to the Apple Star Story. I remember hearing something like it as a kid. We did look at the difference in the shapes in how you cut the apples and the star in the middle when we did our apple prints but I am definitely going to share the story with my kiddos :).
