Cylinders (Weekly Unplugged Challenge)

This week’s Unplugged Challenge theme was cylinders and although I had quite a few crafty ideas we just never got a chance to do them. BUT we did do both an indoor and outdoor scavenger hunt looking for cylinders and had some fun. Here was one of our favorite outdoor cylinder finds… the log stumps at Gammy’s house that are set up to be used as a balance beam type activity (they will be spread out more as the kids get bigger). They also make a great outdoor table for the sand box tea parties. Very fun and free idea for the backyard!

I did have visions of the logs serpentining around the green belt a bit more, but for now, this seems to be working out great! I also think it’s far easier for DH to mow around! And I love how we have one vision of how children will play with something, and they come up with their own ideas! All the better!

Hi 🙂 I finally set up an account so that I can leave you a comment 🙂 What a great idea with the log rounds! I also joined your wee folk crafting circle, looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun 🙂 I’m glad you shared about it!

Yeah – the log rounds are a lot of fun and such an easy/cheap accessory to the backyard. And they look a lot nicer looking than yet another big plastic Step 2 type product.

Glad you made your way to Wee Folk Art. I think it is going to be a lot of fun to see everyone’s completed projects!

Where did your mom get the log rounds? Are they from a tree that they were already cutting down in their yard, or something like that? We have a tree or two that needs to come down, but they are maples, and I might have to fight DH for the wood if I want to do something like this. He’ll want to cure it and make something with it! (Which of course, I encourage since it gets me cool furniture and such.)

I like your cylinder scavenger hunt idea. That is fun!

Thanks for posting about the crafting circle. I might sign up, although I am really not terribly crafty. It sounds fun though.

    Thanks for joining in!

I believe she got the logs from someone who sells firewood… but I’m actually not totally sure.

It is pretty cool that your DH has gotten into furniture making… hard to complain about that ;).

Hmmm…firewood. That’s a good idea. No shortage of firewood around here (yet – thankfully heating oil prices are going down!). Someone DH works with has 40 acres and they cut all their own logs for the winter, I bet I could buy some off of them. That would be so fun to have in the backyard! We’ve been talking about having some natural play structures in our yard, but haven’t really thought about what or how.

I was planning on calling a firewood supplier and asking for unsplit logs. Just so happened someone in the neighborhood was taking down a couple of trees in their yard and had the wood cut into pieces. At 5;30 a.m. on his morning walk with the dog DH saw a “FREE WOOD” sign up. He went back and loaded up all that would fit in the car. We went back later and got a few more. I love the Arbor Day site Michelle mentioned. I’ve always been a believer in naming areas of the yard, and Arbor Day talks about doing just that. This fall I plan to make signs for the different areas including The Serenity Garden, The Dragon Fly, The Fairie Forest, and The Green Belt! Sounds like a project for the kids!
