Back to the Books

Today was our official first day of school… well you know, as official as it gets when you are homeschooling. I cleaned out the library, sharpened all the colored pencils and lined up all of our new books that I have been keeping from the kids. Maybe that seems silly, to not let the kids look through the books as they came in, but the anticipation of waiting to read their new books is making them all the more exciting now.

They couldn’t sleep last night because they were so excited. I gave up on bedtime and let them run around the backyard at 9:30pm to catch fireflies in their pjs because… well because they could. We followed up our lessons this afternoon with a swim in Gammy’s pool. So the summer is still on, just with a bit of bookish stuff too. Why so early you might ask? Because we enjoy taking December off just to focus on the holidays.

We picked up right were we left off at the beginning of June with things like phonics and math. New to the mix is a stack of Fairy Tale picture books and the Hideaways in History curriculum. Our main science unit won’t start up until after Labor Day because some friends will be joining us but in the mean time we have a few nature study projects in the works. As if on cue all of our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis today and we started on a fun tree project (more details to come on both of those).

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

We had a wonderful break. I loved all those glorious, lazy days. I was a little sad last night when we decided not to light a fire because we had to go to bed early. But boy oh boy does it feel good to get back to our routine today. I won’t lie… it wasn’t our easiest of mornings but there was a lot of excitement as we started up some new activities/projects.

Fairy was eager to get out the paints, play math games and listen to our story of the week (3x).

Bug has started a new project on dinosaurs and dug through many a dino book. (Lucky us… who needs a library when you can ransack Gammy’s basement. My mom ran a preschool for 10 years and kept everything!) He drew several Tyrannosaurus illustrations.

The Pixie girl was just thrilled to have the gnome house back down at her level, which had been moved to make way for the Christmas tree.

I hope everyone else is making a nice transition back into routine.
