Fairy celebrated her fifth birthday last week! She gots lots of sewing stuff, as requested and her grandparents indulged her in her request for a REAL pink camera. She had a party earlier in the week with a bunch of her friends and her only request for that was a pinata. Super fun!

What kind of sewing machine is that? I bought my 5 yo DD a sewing machine and it didn’t knot the stitches or have a bobbin so you’d sew but then when you pulled out your fabric, the stitches would pull out as well. It was worthless! She’s very interested in sewing though and I’d love to have a machine that worked for her to use!
It is from Alex Toys but I don’t recommend it. I actually won it for her from a contest on SweetTidings blog (which was awesome! — Thanks again Christy) so I decided to give it a try with Fairy. After about 20 minutes we gave up with the thread. It won’t maintain the right tention so the bobbin thread tangles. What we have done with it and she loves… I made up a bunch of paper cards with lines for her to follow. That has been great and all the kids are having fun with learning how to stitch in a straight line, lift the pressure foot and line up the needle but it doesn’t really sew. What I’ve been eyeing for her is the Singer Student Sewing Machine
from HearthSong. After she has had a bit more practice with the little one I will be upgrading it to this one for her. HTH.
It looks like Fairy had a great birthday! How can you go wrong with a pink cake and sprinkles?? I noticed Hello Kitty machines at my local fabric store the last time I was there in their classroom. I asked about them, and they raved about how great they were. I thought it was funny that this awesome fabric store was using Hello Kitty machines for their classes (they had about 6 in there), but they said they work marvelously, and they are nice and compact. Might be worth some comparison shopping. Good idea about the sewing cards. Happy Birthday Fairy! I love your birthday dress!
I actually was contemplating the Hello Kitty Model 11706 prior to winning the Alex Toys one. I believe it is made by Janome (and based on their 3/4 sized machines – 6 stitches and button hole). They are available at Target. That one does get decent reviews (it is a teal blue)… the smaller ChainStitch and LockStitch Hello Kitty ones do not. I had forgotten about it (thanks for the reminder 🙂 ). It might not be a bad replacement choice when she is ready for the step up… which at the rate she is hand sewing around here will probably be soon (she is doing all the projects that came with the machine by hand). Although… she has learned a lesson… cuteness is not cause to buy an appliance. She doesn’t care any more if her sewing machine is pink or girly… just that it sews ;). Well she did say, "I can put stickers on it."
BTW – Alex Toys sent us a replacement machine after I contacted their customer service. It works a bit better and will actually run without jamming but the stitches are not locked.
That is so stinkin’ cute…..”I can put stickers on it.” Well, learning to hand sew is definitely a good skill to have!
