We took advantage of a beautiful afternoon yesterday and completed our Fall Tree Nature Study. We haven’t be doing any of the Handbook of Nature Study Blog Challenges since the spring and we had a lot of fun getting started again. The kids each got to pick new trees for this year.
Fairy picked her favorite apple tree. (She spends a lot of time up in that tree). The apple tree will definitely go through a lot of changes throughout the year and should make for a fun study. She spent a lot of time trying to pick just the right color green for the leaves.

Bug picked a Rock Elm, which we identified earlier this fall, that is right smack in the middle of the yard. This is a great choice because we can see if from the kitchen table. He added halloween characters to his tree drawing (I guess it shows it’s autumn). LOL – that boy doodles in every margin.

What a wonderful tree study you had this time for the OH Challenge. The journals are so great and I love the personal touches. I have a hard time picking just the right green as well…and I have a whole collection just like you do for just such a drawing. I also have a hard time with bark color since I think it should be brown but rarely is a tree’s bark brown but rather grey or reddish or some other color.
I would love to share a couple of your photos as part of the OH Challenge Photo of the Week this time around. Please let me know if that would be okay with you. harmonyfinearts@yahoo.com.
Thanks so much for sharing your entry.

That is fine Barb. We love the challenges… thanks for all you do!
I am fascinated by Bug’s branches! And his 2 handed coloring. The advantegous of being left handed! And Fairy looks very much at home in the tree… but she is a Fairy, after all!
Great job, love those sketches. I’d love to have an apple tree to explore…what kind is it?
I’m not positive but I think it is a Red Delicious… at least by taste that is what a couple of us have guessed.
Did you make or do you have a link… We have been trying to hunt down some good nature journal pages. And I love the one your kiddos are using 😀
The notebook pages you see in these photos were provided by Barb from the Handbook of Nature Study Blog. But I do have a bunch of my own that you can find at the bottom of my Planner Page Post.
HTH 🙂
I would love an apple tree in our yard. That looks like a great one!
Warning… they make a huge mess! Oh the bees…
BTW – If you plant a fruit tree… I’m pretty sure in most cases the recommend having two for pollination.
