Back to the Books

Today was our official first day of school… well you know, as official as it gets when you are homeschooling. I cleaned out the library, sharpened all the colored pencils and lined up all of our new books that I have been keeping from the kids. Maybe that seems silly, to not let the kids look through the books as they came in, but the anticipation of waiting to read their new books is making them all the more exciting now.

They couldn’t sleep last night because they were so excited. I gave up on bedtime and let them run around the backyard at 9:30pm to catch fireflies in their pjs because… well because they could. We followed up our lessons this afternoon with a swim in Gammy’s pool. So the summer is still on, just with a bit of bookish stuff too. Why so early you might ask? Because we enjoy taking December off just to focus on the holidays.

We picked up right were we left off at the beginning of June with things like phonics and math. New to the mix is a stack of Fairy Tale picture books and the Hideaways in History curriculum. Our main science unit won’t start up until after Labor Day because some friends will be joining us but in the mean time we have a few nature study projects in the works. As if on cue all of our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis today and we started on a fun tree project (more details to come on both of those).

Happy first day of school!! I was going to ask if you were going to post your fall book list since I really enjoy looking through your book selections, and there it was! Did all of your butterflies make it? Last time we did it, one wasn’t able to get out of his chrysalis. I’ll be interested to hear how Bug likes his Ancients study. DH loves ancient history and would probably enjoy sharing that with the kids.

  2. Gammy says:

How exciting to start a new year of school! I’m looking forward to YOU teaching ME all the way cool things you’ll be learning.

I don’t know how I found your blog, but I have been a frequent visitor for a while. Your plans from last year have been an inspiration as I am planning my son’s first grade year and my daughter’s preschool year.

Best wishes to you and your little ones this year.

  4. G says:

We’re doing a lot of fairy tales this year too. Looking forward to watching your homeschooling year unfold!

  5. Michelle says:

Bean – glad you have gotten some inspiration from us. We had a lot of fun last year and everything seemed to flow so nicely with the seasons.

G – The Fairy Tales were going to be for my littles but I am thinking we may be moving more that way for my first grader too. Not sure he is ready for the history stuff I’ve compiled… it may get shelved for a bit. Last year went so beautifully we will probably head more in that direction again.
